The outcome of the 2024 U.S. presidential elections, as well as the European Parliament elections held this June, is expected to influence the course of events in the rest of the world for years to come. Although the presidential race in the U.S. this year seemed to be reminiscent of 2020, a series of significant events unfolded in the meantime, creating new circumstances in which the elections took place. Not only that the U.S. position towards other parts of the world, including China, Global South and the Balkans, might change, but it also seems that the results of the U.S. election will have crucial impact on the survival of democracy itself. When it comes to Europe, the November’s results will also impact Transatlantic partnership, especially when Europe also navigates a period of global change. The 2024 European Parliament elections saw a shift to the right in many countries. Although right-wing and far-right parties made significant gains, they did not achieve the results polls predicted. To what extent will this “sharp right turn” in the European Parliament elections have an effect on the foreign policy choices that the EU can make? Will it present a challenge or an opportunity for the EU’s strategic autonomy and its aspirations to be an independent geopolitical actor? What consequences will the new majority have on the future shaping of the EU political and financial support for Kyiv? What impact will the U.S. elections have on U.S. domestic politics and its foreign policy? Is the U.S. still a hegemon or just a leading power in a multipolar world? These are the main questions that will be discussed at the panel. |
