Day 1

12:00 – 13:00

Black Sea Region at the Boiling Point

The development of the war in Ukraine has brought uncertainty, geopolitical repositioning and new security challenges to the Black Sea region.

Threats to the integrity of and the danger of a renewed conflict in Moldova, increased combat readiness and the NATO presence in Romania, the energy threat to Bulgaria and Turkey’s role as a war mediator are just some of the results of Russia’s aggression against its neighbour. The escalation of the war threatens to drag the entire region into a spiral of conflict entailing unfathomable economic consequences. How likely is the conflict to spread beyond the borders of Ukraine? Is NATO’s presence a sufficient deterrent? What is Turkey’s role in this conflict? How did the Russian invasion affect the internal dynamics of neighbouring countries? These are some of the questions that will be raised at the panel.
