The Covid-19 pandemic has brought to the surface all the fractures and vulnerabilities of our polarised world. The Russian war of aggression against Ukraine renewed the fear of a major global conflict that we thought belonged to a distant past, further exacerbating the general feeling of insecurity. The erosion of the social fabric of our societies, political and social polarisation, threats to our democracies, atomisation of the individual and the growing inability of the state to deal with the challenges of the 21st century, are all causing deep anxiety, but also the awakening and realisation that we must act together. This panel of philanthropists aims to address the pressing issues and challenges faced by societies worldwide in adapting to the changing times. Recognising the deep imperfections in our current democratic institutions, should philanthropy play a new and expanded role in helping the state face the present challenges? Can philanthropy help repair democracy? The panellists will share insights and perspectives on how societies can best prepare for and adapt to these challenges and identify potential solutions that could help create a better future for all.
