Ukraine and the Allies: Keeping the Firm Rock Unity and Solidarity

Causing widespread daily devastation in the name of a dictator’s imperial plan, Vladimir Putin’s war of aggression against Ukraine demands a strong, creative response by the global community of democracies.  The vision of a free, democratic, modernised and European Ukraine is the answer to Putin’s challenge. Once the war ends, Ukraine will need reconstruction, but it will also require security guarantees to prevent another attack from the Kremlin. Just like the 1994 Budapest Memorandum provided hollow assurances against Moscow’s attack, a simple truce with Russia, like the one in 2014/2015, will not prevent a renewed attack sometime in the future. Will the war end with Ukraine having to accept secession of parts of its territory in return for EU membership, or will it end with a total defeat of Putin’s dictatorship? Could NATO membership or a strong alliance with the US without membership (like that of Israel) be the solution, or would the EU membership for Ukraine suffice? The aim of this panel is to address different scenarios for the future of Ukraine and the entire continent.
