Marko Makovec is a Slovenian diplomat who joined the EEAS as Director and Deputy Managing Director in charge of Western Europe/Arctic, South East Europe/Western Balkans, Turkey/EastMed and United Kingdom in December 2020. Before joining EEAS, Mr Makovec served as the Ambassador, Representative of the Republic of Slovenia to the Political and Security Committee of the EU in Slovenian Permanent Representation. He was also for several years the Principal Foreign Policy Adviser to the President of the RS (2013 – 2017) as well as the Principal Foreign Policy Adviser to the Prime Minister of RS (2008 – 2012). Mr Makovec started his diplomatic career in 2004, having occupied several positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RS (Head of the Western Balkans Department, Department for International Law, coordinator for European Councils in the EU sector, etc). During the Slovenian Presidency of the EU in 2008, he was National delegate to the Working Party for Western Balkans (COWEB) in Brussels. He also served in the Slovenian embassy in Rome as Deputy Head of Mission.
