Dr. Maest is an aqueous geochemist with Buka Environmental in Colorado, USA, and Senior Technical Advisor to the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA). Ann has more than 25 years of research and professional experience in the water quality effects of hardrock mining. Her recent areas of focus are development of responsible mining standards, mine remediation, and watershed and geochemical modeling. Throughout her career she has worked for and with communities on independent monitoring and community capacity building projects; trained government agencies on the environmental effects of mining, best practices, and water quality monitoring; and taught short courses at international conferences on geochemical modeling and mine waste characterization. Ann has served on several National Academy of Sciences’ geosciences committees and a board and was an invited speaker on technical challenges and solutions for the mining sector at the United Nations. Ann holds a PhD from Princeton University in Geochemistry and Water Resources.
