Dr Marta Martinelli is a non-resident scholar at Carnegie Europe. Her fields of expertise are human rights, democracy, peacebuilding and conflict resolution, and gender. Her current research focuses on the EU’s role in addressing forgotten conflicts examining how the EU exerts influence and perceptions from non-EU countries. Previously, Marta was Senior Director of Programs at the Center for Civilians in Conflict (2022 – 2024), overseeing operations and teams in several conflict countries, as well as advocacy and research. Prior to CIVIC Marta spent more than ten years with the Open Society Foundations as head of the EU external relations team, acting Deputy Director and senior Africa policy officer. As OSF Special Advisor on security governance she contributed to deepening the Foundation’s programmatic engagement in Europe, Africa and South-East Asia. She also worked in Kinshasa for the EU mission for Security Sector Reform in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and from 2005-2009 was a member of the Task Force on Peacebuilding of the Belgian Directorate General for Development.
