Sophie in ‘t Veld

Former Member of the European Parliament (2004-2024)

Sophie in ‘t Veld was a Member of the European Parliament 2004-2024. Initially for the Dutch social-liberal party D66 and for the pan-Europan party Volt from 2023. In the European Parliament she belonged to the Liberal Renew Group and served as its deputy leader 2014-2019 and its spokesperson on civil liberties, justice and home affairs (2019-2024). Throughout, the prime focus of her parliamentary work has been on democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights. She was the architect of the EU Annual Rule of Law Report. At her initiative the EP Democracy, Rule of Law, Fundamental Rights Monitoring Group was created in 2018, and she chaired it until 2024. During her four terms she was involved as rapporteur in many flagship legislative files, such as the GDPR, the Migration Pact and the criminalisation of sanctions evasion. She was the rapporteur of the European Parliament inquiry committee into the abuse of spyware (PEGA).
