How to Counter Disinformation in the Western Balkans?

It is by no coincidence that tendentious and biased reporting, distortion of facts, dissemination of fake news, hate speech and other forms of disinformation saturate the Western Balkan public space.

The manipulative communication serves the interests of the regional state captors by enabling narrative legitimation of the abuse of public resources, the concentration of power and the violation of democratic processes. The results are devastating: regional stability is compromised, undemocratic actors empowered and institutions discouraged from changing the status quo. As much as countering the production and dissemination of disinformation has become a security imperative, effective ways to do so remain ever so elusive. In this panel, the participants will assess the outcomes of past and ongoing initiatives to stand up to and curb disinformation in the Western Balkans and discuss the possible ways of revving up these efforts, including through the use of state-of-the-art approaches.
